The Finn McHooligans are an Irish pub band that plays around Topeka, KS. Consisting of Patrick Lytle on vocals and guitar and Victor Stoica on percussion. The band differs from your average Irish pub band in that the most Irish member is actually more than half-German and the other one is full blooded Romanian! Another difference that one would notice is that their song choices are far from traditional. To the average pub goers hearing the lyrics “Sanitarium, leave me be!” over a sweet acoustic guitar interlude and soft bongo beats may not seem too alarming but any metal head could tell you it’s actually old school Metallica!
“We play what we know, and we know metal.” Says frontman Patrick Lytle who sites bands like Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys for the inspiration that drives the side project. “We asked ourselves how we could get our names out in the local music community with only two people and then it hit us; pub band!”
Patrick sings with a thick Irish accent but speaks as plainly as any Topeka resident. I asked him why.
“It just wouldn’t be the same. If I didn’t then people would think that we were just a crappy, soft acoustic band, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. The reason that we chose to do an Irish project band is because we feel that the Irish culture shares a lot of the same motivation with the Metal culture. It’s all about getting drunk and having a good time with your friends.”
